Whew. Finally found my attention span. Cats hid it under the couch.
Nice stuff. Keep it coming...
I was out walking when it happened.
A police cruiser came up along side of me. A window lowered, and the officer asked, "Are you Jacques Lafontaine?"
"Yes," I answered.
"Please stop and step into the vehicle."
"Have I done something wrong sir?"
"Just step into the vehicle."
The door on the side nearest me opened up and I saw a man in a suit sitting there. I eyed the officer for a moment.
"May I ask why?"
"Mr. Lafontaine, please, this is the last time I'm going to ask politely. Step into the vehicle."
The man in the back seat looked at me and smiled. "Jacues, hello. I am Peter Reiple from the Defense Ministry. We've been trying to contact you for some weeks regarding your conscription orders. I'd like to go to your home and discuss this with you."
I considered this. If he was indeed from the Defense Ministry, why hadn't he simply called me? And for that matter, why did he feel the need of a police escort in order to contact me?
"Well, I'd like to finish my walk if you don't mind. Can I meet you there in an hour?" It was worth a shot.
He smiled and motioned to the officer. "Certainly, that's no problem. We'll meet you at your home in 1 hour. Please don't be late."
The door shut and the car lifted into the air. I watched as it rose, and then turned back towards home, less than 20 minutes away.
********
"I'm not sure exactly. I couldn't get a read on him at all. If anything, he was unfailingly polite."
I was speaking to my friend Phoenix, a healer I had gotten to know over the course of the last few years.
"Well, I suppose you should meet with him, just be careful, and don't sign anything."
"I hadn't planned on it. He can come and speak to me all he wishes, but I've made it abundantly clear that I want no part of this." I was shaking a little, with anticipation.
I had considered running, at least temporarily, but to what purpose? All that would accomplish would be a charge of evasion. Better to face the music and see what happens.
"Well, call me when it's all over and let me know what happens."
"Ok, I will. Take care"
"You too dear." The screen shut off.
I sat down in my chair and stared at the door, waiting for Patrick Reiple to show up. I hoped that he would be alone, but it was highly doubtful. I let my mind drift, from the door to the planter next to it. I had a miniature maple growing in it. It wasn't quite to it's full size of 10 feet yet, but it was getting there.
The door chime sounded. I got up and walked to the intercom.
Good job. I like it. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

"See that star...the one shining brighter than all the others? I know the girl who hung it there."
An hour later I was in a holding cell.
After Patrick Reiple had come to my flat to talk, I had let him in, and we sat down. I offered him tea, which he graciously accepted, while commenting on the relative lack of personal belongings in my flat besides books, music files and a few plants.
He told me that the government of Europa had been keeping an eye on me ever since I had tapped into and taken an interest in the teachings of Gloria Ruiz. That stopped me cold. I turned to him.
"I'm sorry, did you just say that you've been spying on me?"
He smiled, a thin, spiteful smile. "In a manner of speaking, yes."
I walked out of the kitchen with the tea and set it on the table. I stood there, in shock.
"Believe me Mr. Lafontaine, this happens all the time. There are certain files and other such information sources that are 'tagged' as we like to say. When someone hits a tagged file, we watch them for 30 days. If it happens more frequently and on a constant basis, as it has with you, we up the survailance."
I walked to the window and looked out. I was too shocked to speak, but at the same time, it all made sense.
"So, you see, since we can't charge you with an actual crime, we still need to keep track of you. The Defense Ministry is perfect for this."
"Your honesty, while refreshing, seems not entirely genuine."
"Oh, the Defense Ministry is nothing if not honest and open. If we feel the need to, we will tell a citizen anything they wish to know. The reason I'm telling you what I'm telling you is in hopes of getting you to join the Ministry on your own. Please don't make us create false charges against you and put you in jail. Join the Ministry. Go to Phobos. I will guarantee, in writing, in a document you may send to as many legal witnesses as you like, that you will be given an administrative job, no combat, no danger."
I turned to him. He sat there with a smug look on his face, like he knew exactly what I was going to say and do. A document and a pen sat on the table in front of him.
"And if I refuse?"
He sighed, and the smile only barely diminished. He looked at his watch and spoke.
"Officer, could you please come up here. Mr. Lafontaine has illegal narcotics in his flat."

do not fear your enemies . the worst they can do is kill you . do not fear friends . at worst they may betray you . fear those who do not care ; they neither kill nor betray but betrayal and murder exist because of thier silent consent .
Since I'm working on this again, I figured I'd bring it back to the top.
